![]() History In 1999, Northwest Airlines had an incident in which thousands of passengers were stranded on the tarmac. They were left without food, water and bathroom facilities. Consequently, the first Passenger Bill of Rights was introduced but failed to muster enough votes for passage. In 2001, Senator John McCain proposed the second Airlines Passenger Bill of Rights, but due to strong airline lobbying the legislation never passed. The airlines pledged to undergo internal reviews of their customer service policies, but six years later we still face the same problems. After the American Airlines passenger stranding in 2006, Kate Hanni, a passenger on American Airlines flight 1348, and her fellow passengers founded the Coalition for Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights. With the support of other disgruntled passengers, the coalition gathered stories from other troubled travelers – one more horrific than the other. The coalition has successfully convinced Members of Congress to introduce a new Passengers’ Bill of Rights. To date, the Coalition continues advocate for an Airline Passenger’s Bill of Rights that will give the flying public a legal voice and recourse. |
