unsecured babies

Postby nitaroyal » Tue Mar 15, 2011 7:40 pm

This one has puzzled me for years: So much focus is placed on ensuring that bags, even small purses are stored under the seats during takeoff and landing. I was told by a flight attendant that this was to prevent objects flying around in the event of turbulence. Yet babies are commonly unsecured in the same circumstances. It was proven long ago that babies weren't protected by riding in their parents' laps when in a car, so why is a plane any different? Ignoring the obvious risk to the child, I'm not keen on having a 25 pound small human flying around like a missile!

I completely agree with you 100%. We always bring a car seat for our youngest child on the flight; the other can use a seat belt now. Unfortunately FAA guidelines recommend a car seat but don't require them. Many groups have lobbied for a change, including AFA (Association of Flight Attendants). The biggest factor of course is the cost factor. It always comes down to the dollar doesn't it? Fly Safe- J

This argument makes perfect sense and it's one that I've never thought about. I think they should change the rules and require all people to be secured including babies. I know when my daughter was a baby, we would bring her baby carrier and have her secure. In fact, I would try to keep her secure the whole flight unless she got fussy and I then I would only get her out until she went back to sleep and then I'd put her immediately back in her carrier.
My bags are packed, I just need airline tickets.
