Reimbursement for overnight stay

I flew UA from London to Chicago and was supposed to get a connecting flight to Denver. Originally there was a 90 minute connection time but we were late arriving into Chicago by 30 minutes. Absolutely no way to make it through customs, security and to the new concourse and gate even though we ran at least half a mile. We were 2 minutes late. We were told there were no more flights that night to Denver and there was no reimbursement for an overnight stay. Can this be right?
